Batman is a human in a face-covering costume, so it's natural to wonder what he looks like underneath, and assume he has some other name and life.

But Superman is a superpowered alien who shows his face - why even think that he has an ordinary life somewhere on Earth as a human? In the various DC continuities, is the idea that Superman has another identity widely believed?

In the Post-Crisis comics at least, there are multiple statements indicating that it is not widely known that Superman has a secret identity.

BATMAN: By going maskless as Superman, you divert most people from thinking you might spend part of your time as someone else. After all, it's not likely you'd wear a mask in civilian life.

SUPERBOY: See, the Bat-guys--they wear masks and slink around in the dark, but with us S-guys--we're all about truth! I mean, we keep other people's secrets, but when it comes to us--everything's on the table! No disguises, no secret I.D.'s...

STEEL: I don't know, kid--sometimes I wish I still had a secret identity.

SUPERGIRL: And... and how can we really know that, say, Superman--or any of us--doesn't have one?

SUPERBOY: Excuse me--Superman? If the Big Righteous "S" had a secret life, we'd know 'cause he woulda told us!

SUPERMAN: My name... I'm really nervous... my name is Clark Kent. I'm a reporter for the Daily Planet. And this is really not easy for me... so feel free to say something.

GREEN LANTERN: He doesn't... wear a mask. I never even... thought he had a... day job.

No, as only his very closest friends know that he is Clark kent, but there was a time when he exposed Himself publicly as being Clark kent, but Manchester Black used his mental powers to give everyone amnesia on that. One interesting truth is lex did at times discover that he was Clark, butr always thinks that is fake news, as no way Superman would ever allow Himself to act as that timid and weak Clark kent

Hi, welcome to SF&F. You could improve your answer if you included references to the actual issues in which the events you describe occur. Even better if you can show cases where it's obvious that people don't know him. Commented Oct 23 at 15:09
  • Superman #2 (post Crisis volume) - Lex's computer deduces that Superman is Clark Kent. Lex discounts it, exclaiming "no man with the power of Superman would ever pretend to be human". Commented Oct 23 at 17:21
