I read this book series through Kindle Unlimited a while ago about an ex-military diver who is developing a new sonar for the military as a private company and stumbles upon a hidden spaceship under the water.

There's an AI that embeds with him, and sleeping crew on the ship (I believe they were scouting new planets to fight another alien race, but I can't be sure). He creates a new company with the help of the AI, along with his brother and daughter, he advances technology exponentially, and eventually makes it to space. He also creates his own country on a man-made island.

Eventually, aliens show up, and there are numerous space battles. The science and activities in space are somewhat realistic.

This is probably the same as the question Sci-fi book series with fisherman finding AI-crewed spaceship that I answered in January. Depending on the exact details it is either Starship Sakira by Bob Blanton, first book of the Delphi in Space series, or Discovery by Jack Drafahl and Sue Drafahl, the first book in the Ship series.

Since you mention sonar I'd guess this is Starship Sakira as in that book the protagonist, Marc McCormack, is a scientist developing a new form of sonar.

Starship Sakira

What would you do if you found a spaceship? Would you call the government, would you pretend you never saw it, or would you keep it a secret? What would you do with it? Use it to gallivant around the galaxy, conquer Earth, get filthy rich, or try to improve life on Earth? Read along and find out how Marc tries to convert Earth into a spacefaring world capable of defending itself and of being united as it meets the other civilizations in the galaxy.

Marc and his crew need to accomplish all this without tipping off the U.S. government and before the Paraxeans come looking for their spaceship. But they have help, the ship's AI is on their side and she's smart. Starship Sakira is the first book in the exciting new adventure series Delphi in Space.

However I don't think Marc builds a man made island. He buys one of the islands in the Cook islands that is called Manuae. This happens right at the end of the book.
