In season 2, episode 10 of Andor, Luthen Rael meets with his agent within the ISB, Lonni Jung. Jung tips him off that the ISB are onto Luthen, and also tells him about the plans for the Death Star.

Luthen then

kills Jung with the blaster pistol he brought to the meeting, right there on the park bench.

My question is, why?

Is it punishment for withholding his access to Dedra's files from Luthen? Out of fear that Jung would be captured and reveal the location of Yavin Base? (Why, then, tell him where the base is?) It seems like a "blown" Jung is still more valuable than a dead one, and there's also the ethical issue of what Luthen owes Jung.

We've already seen Luthen to be quite ruthless in dealing with potential threats to his identity or the fledgling rebellion (he had Tay killed; readily allowed Kreegyr and his wing to be slaughtered in an ambush; and even ordered the assassination of the show's hero in season one).

The information Lonni supplied was extremely vital to the rebellion. Add to that, the threat from ISB was ever increasing. Luthen decided then and there to immediately burn down the operation on Coruscant, and have himself and Kleya deliver the information themselves.

There was no time to safely extract Lonni and his family.

Luthen told Lonni that he would be extracted to Yavin in order to get the information from the reluctant agent. He had already decided that extracting Lonni was too risky, and so it didn't matter that Luthen revealed anything as long as he got the information he needed.

I read Luthen revealing Yavin to Lonni was to gauge whether or not the ISB was already onto the rebellion's base of operations. If Lonni was surprised, then Yavin was safe for Luthen and Kleya at least. Commented May 19 at 18:16
