I've seen lots of questions about putting punctuation in quotes or not.

But I couldn't quite see which is correct here:

I just finished reading Willa Cather's O Pioneers!. (with period)

I just finished reading Willa Cather's O Pioneers! (without)

An exclamation mark finishes a sentence. A fullstop is redundant.

"I just finished reading Willa Cather's O Pioneers! (without)" is correct.

How does one handle the related query? << • "Have you finished reading Willa Cather's O Pioneers ______ >> [guillemets and bullet merely my formatting aids] // The issue of 'double punctuation' (usually involving at least one question mark) is far from simple and far from decided. How do you yourself sign for an exclamation mark, if desired, after the statement (I just finished reading Willa Cather's O Pioneers!!)? Although it can certainly get messy, double punctuation is often seen as the lesser of two evils (the greater being lack of clarity) in the UK. Commented Mar 1 at 14:37
