I have 6 wood posts I want to connect to a Trex deck. Each 5-1/2" x 5-1/2" hollowed cedar post has a ~7x7" metal plate attached at the bottom. Below the 1" Trex there is a 6x6" treated piece of lumber with 2.5x8" cut out of 2 sides to allow the 2x8" deck frame to sit on the treated posts below.

Originally I was going to put some lag bolts in to anchor the cedar posts to the deck but seeing as how I'd have to angle those bolts pretty good to get into the wood under the deck I'm reaching out to to the web.

Question

What is a good way to make sure these posts (for a pavilion) don't move during the occasional desert micro-burst? (wind gusts up to 70 mph).

  • Can you get a matching plate? Commented Feb 23 at 15:36
  • @Huesmann I think I see where you are going. I'm realizing I can remove the current foot plate, drill press some new holes into it, mount the plate to the deck, then re-affix the post tot he plate. Commented Feb 23 at 17:29
  • Actually, I'm thinking to place the plate below the deck and bolt through the deck to the foot plate. It'd be nice to put some kind of fasteners into the post and/or beam, but getting everything fastened in tight quarters might be difficult. Commented Feb 24 at 12:59

I decided to take the original feet and drill new holes closer to the center. I used a drill press to drill the hole then used a bigger steel bit to make the holes counter sunk to let the wood screw fit flush against the top of the plate.

I used a handyman / farmer's jack to jack up the posts by wrapping a tie-down / tow strap around the post several times then around the jack's big tooth. Ultimately I asked a friend to help as it was more convenient than using the tie-down.
